Applications are invited to pursue a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Nursing at the University of Rwanda. This opportunity will train mental health nurse-scientists at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (KCMC), Kilimanjaro Christian Medical University (KCMUCo), and Kilimanjaro Clinical Research Institute (KCRI) capable of leading clinical research to address the unique mental health challenges of older adults living with HIV (OALWH) in Tanzania. Successful applicants will be supported with a full tuition scholarship for 3-4 years of study to develop the skills to:
1. Become an independent research scientist within a structured and mentored training environment, and
2. Assist in the formation of training programs for mental health and HIV nursing at KCMC, KCMUCo, and KCRI.
The PhD program will be completed remotely while living in Moshi, Tanzania, with the opportunity for brief travel (1-3 weeks) for regional and international training opportunities.
Benefits of the program include: (1) a full tuition scholarship to complete the PhD in Nursing program at the University of Rwanda; (2) a partial monthly stipend of $250 U.S. per month for the first twelve months of the program; (3) the possibility to be engaged in ongoing mental health studies to gain research experience with qualified mentors; (4) a laptop computer, (5) $1000 U.S. in research funds to conduct a mentored research project; and (5) travel support for regional and international educational opportunities.
Applicants must be a Tanzanian citizen, have an established Master of Science degree in Nursing, and demonstrate prior experience and interest in the areas of mental health nursing, HIV care, and/or providing social support for older adults with chronic health conditions.
The PhD program will run for three to four years. Graduates will be required to serve at KCMC, KCMUCo, and/or KCRI during the completion of the PhD program (3-4 years), and for a minimum of two years following graduation, for a total service time of five to six years. The candidate should live on-site at KCMC and be available on a full-time basis throughout the full length of the program. Applicants must show a commitment to pursuing a research and academic career at KCMC, KCMUCo, and/or KCRI.
The successful applicants will be supported to develop skills and become an independent research scientist within a structured and mentored training environment, with support from skilled supervisors from the University of Rwanda, KCMC, KCMUCo, and KCRI in Tanzania, and Duke University in the United States.
Selected applicants will receive support and mentorship to apply for admission to the PhD in Nursing program at the University of Rwanda and to seek relevant employment at KCMC. Successful admission to the PhD program at the University of Rwanda will required to continue in the program. Program mentors will provide support in the application process.
Qualifications (Required):
Tanzanian citizenship
A Master of Science degree in Nursing
Prior experience and interest in the areas of mental health nursing, HIV care, or providing
social support for older adults with chronic health conditions
Fluent spoken and written English and Kiswahili
Computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, typing, data entry, and email
Excellent collaborative communication skills, teamwork experience and skills.
Interest in acquiring data analytic/data science and implementation science skills
Desired Additional Experience/Skills
Experience in the leadership, design, or administration of educational programs
Prior experience in research (e.g. data collection, research writing, journal publications)
Experience in program evaluation
Skills in data analysis (qualitative and/or quantitative)

A research concept note describing the problem you are most excited to solve during the

Three letters of reference along with names and telephone numbers of the three referees who may be contacted by us in confidence. One of these should be able to attest to your academic performance during your BSc/MSc
Photocopies of certificates, diplomas, and academic transcripts for both Bachelor’s and Master’s-level studies. This must include a Master of Science degree in Nursing

Selection Process
Candidates will be short-listed based on their initial application and recommendation letters. A personal interview will be requested for competitive applicants. The selected candidates will then receive support and mentorship to apply to the PhD in Nursing at the University of Rwanda and must be accepted for admission by the University of Rwanda prior to commencing the program. Successful candidates will be expected to arrive in Moshi and begin remote studies at the University of Rwanda in early 2024.
